Here is an idea that just seems to make sense. Using the sun to generate the electricity to cool you down during the hottest part of the day. This technology is emerging slowly but I believe we will see more and more of this type as the energy crunch grows. The SolCool Solar Powered A/C uses solar panels to directly power the unit. It can also purify drinking water (a little bonus there). It contains a battery back-up for nighttime and can be plugged in normally if all else fails.

Get into Gardening

To become self sufficient one must plant a garden. The easiest way to do this is to simply grab a shovel, a hoe, some seeds and a hose. Make some rows yourself, which is great exercise, and search the net for tips on growing and what to grow. You can greatly supplement your diet with items you grow yourself even if you have just a small parcel of land to work with. If you have a large one you can grow all you need for yourself and your family (this is very time consuming however).

Take Them for a Walk

Some general advice when you're looking for cheap, healthy alternatives. A good healthy diet will always have:

* Protein in it to build muscle, repair tissue, etc.
* Fat should have a balance of omega 3, 6, and 9.
* Veggies of all types, especially the green, leafy ones.
* Fruits are full of vitamins and "healthy" sugars.
* Water. D'uh. :)
* Whole grain foods, such as bread, pasta, etc...

Tap water. You've heard so much about it and may not like it. However, compare it to a bottled water and you'll see the price difference awfully quick. You should think about switching to tap water. If you don't like the taste, believe it or not it's usually just a simple case of not having adapted to it yet. Drink enough times and you won't even notice anymore. Studies have shown that most tap water is as safe to drink as bottled water (check reports in your area).

Also, check out where your bottled water does come from if you do decide to stick with it. There are a whole lot of them that come from... you guessed it, the tap!

Grab a Can of Tuna

Tuna fish is cheap to buy canned plus it has the added benefit of being an excellent source of protein. There are some great healthy tuna fish recipes out there (check the food section here, maybe?). Zucchini

A good, easy to grow crop is zucchini. Plant some and you will not be disappointed at the yield (it makes PLENTY!). Since you'll probably have more than you can use at the time, a good idea is to dice the zucchini into about cup sized amounts. Take those, place them in a small freezer bag and store them. Pumpkins are another crop that easy to grow, but be warned that you do need a little room for this one to grow properly. You can buy pumpkin seeds, especially if you want to right kind for making pumpkin pie. If you're worried about making pumpkins for Halloween decorations you can just save the seeds from this year's jack-o-lanterns and plant them next year. Don't forget to place hay under each pumpkin as it gets bigger to prevent the underside from discoloring (and in some cases rotting).

Camping Out

Take the family on an old fashioned camping trip. Once you get the initial investment of a tent and some sleeping bags out of the way, camping is a good, cheap, and fun activity to share. Our family loves camping out. The main things to remember is to build a nice campfire (sing some campfire songs or tell some old-fashioned ghost stories), bring easy to cook food (hot dog buns and hot dogs), and check the weather reports.

Also, remember to have a good first aid kit with you. When you're picking up your tent remember to let it dry out before putting it away to prevent mildew.

Recycle Parts

When you are getting rid of an old computer and replacing it with a new one become a scavenger. Pull out the old hard drive, memory, and CD ROM drives from the old computer before discarding it. If you are getting a new monitor, save your old one.

Of course, store your old mouse and keyboard also. That way if a spill occurs on your new keyboard you can just use your old, spare one until you can get a replacement. Scavenging has saved the wife and I a lot of money.

Cold weather camping? Here's a simple trick for making simple hand warmers. Stick your hands in a pair of light socks and mark where your fingertips are. Take a scissors and cut holes out there. You can now wear them on your hands as cheap hand warmers. Next time you need to tie your shoes in the snow, simply remove your pair of gloves with these on and you don't have to completely expose your hands to get the dexterity you need.

Ah, crayons. You can buy these for very little especially in these back to school sales. But what can you do that is different?

Try some crayon etchings. Scribble a black crayon all over a sheet of paper then scrape the wax off to create scary pictures! This is great for spooky times such as Halloween.

Have the kids cover the paper in a bunch of different colors. Take this multi-colored rainbow and then cover this all with black crayon. Do the same as above and scratch out some pictures. This will have a rainbow effect you have to see to appreciate!

Sharpen and Clean Scissors

To sharpen scissors cheaply, get a glass bottle. Insert the cutting edge of the scissors into the neck of the bottle. Open and close the scissors like you're cutting with them. This will sharpen them!

Treating a Cut or Abrasion

Vinegar is a natural astringent that can be used to treat cuts. It will help cleanse the cut as well as help the healing process. Do NOT apply vinegar directly to a cut or wound unless you want the person this is being done to give you a few cuts or abrasions. The vinegar should be diluted by added one part vinegar to three parts warm water. Apply this to the wound. It will sting a little but is a great, cheap cleanser!

Back to Cloth Diapers

Remember, disposable diapers are expensive. One of the things a lot of our frugal friends are doing is returning to cloth diapers. These save you money in the long run but require a bit of daily washing to keep them clean.

Get a small diaper pail with a lid, fill it half way with a solution of water, bleach, and Dreft detergent. After each diaper change add the cloth diaper into the solution. That way, the diapers are sanitized until you can wash them next time (it cuts down on odors as well). That's a tip from the wife.

Easing Menstrual Cramps

Pre-made Halloween costumes are an expense you can do without. Look around in your closets and be creative with your own existing supplies. I made a costume with a black pillowcase (cut two eyeholes), an old graduation gown, and a cardboard axe that actually won a costume contest.

Home-made Modeling Clay

Making Your Own Healthier Soda

Purchase 2-liter bottles of soda water, which is carbonated without the sugar. Buy your favorite type of the half gallon Juicy Juice or other 100% fruit juices. Cleaning a Wound with Iodized Salt

When we get a cut or abrasion we usually apply iodine to it to help kill germs and cleanse the wound. Well, if you are out of iodine are want to use what's already handy, try this little cleansing solution! Iodized salt is simply salt that has had iodine added to it. Add some iodized salt to water (dilute as needed). Apply this liquid to the wound. It will sting a little (or a lot if you didn't dilute properly).

Both the salt and the iodine will work to kill any bacteria around the wound. Clean, simple, and cheap!

Kool-Aid with a Kick

Here's a little idea for adding a little kick to your kool-aid for those addicted to carbonation. Fill up your glass about 3/4 full of unsweetened kool-aid then top it off with either Sprite or 7-up. It will give the mixture the little kick you love!

Add Chalk and Cement

Relieving a Sunburn

Here's a cure a reader from Florida suggested. If you are suffering from a sunburn, cover the burnt areas in milk of magnesia and let it dry. Once it's dry take a good shower to wash it off. This should give you some much needed relief for your burn. Oh yeah, next time use some good sunblock.

Here's something my old chemistry teacher in high school told me that I use every time I get a sore throat. I swear by this remedy! Take a teaspoon of salt and add it to two cups of lukewarm water. Keep Those Car Tires Properly Inflated

Check the pressure on all four car tires about once a week if you can. Remember to read the side of the tire to get the proper air pressure. Remember, do not over-inflate your tires as this can be as bad as under-inflating them.

Keeping the tires properly inflated saves on tire wear making your tires last longer and more importantly saves on gas.

This phrase is used to mean the act of producing your own power. Someday I'd love for solar power to advance to the point where I (and every other American) could step off of the electrical power grid completely and get cheap, free power. Talk about freeing up our dependency on oil.

Ah, the fast food industry loves this little money maker. The simple fact is that pound for pound potatoes are a cheap food. If you ever grow any (see the Gardening Thrift-opedia section) you'll discover why. A little bit of land produces a LOT of potatoes.

If you're going to cook a lot of french fries the convenient (and expensive) way to do this is to buy them frozen. The thrifty way is to buy your potatoes and cut them up yourself. Yes it takes a little time but you can cut as many as you need.

Fresh cut potatoes are awesomely good compared to frozen plus you can cut them to the sizes that you like!

First Aid Kits

Buy some band-aids, gauze, tape, antiseptic, and whatever else you want to put in your first aid kit. You can put together several pretty cheaply. You can purchase some plastic containers pretty cheaply to store these in or just use old cigar boxes. Place a first aid kit wherever you think you might need one.

The wife and I have a first aid kit at home, in our car, and at our cabin. All self made with all the things we'd need in that area. For instance, our cabin first aid kit contains some calamine lotion since we're surrounded by woodlands.

Headache Remedy

A reader swears by this remedy. Dab some peppermint oil onto a cotton ball or paper towel and breathe in the scent for a little while. Be sure not to get any pure peppermint oil in contact with your skin as it may burn. Do this and she suggests the headache will melt away.

This idea requires an initial investment but since I've done it I KNOW it saves money. Find a spot in your area to build a cabin on. I found a cheap piece of land on a nearby bayou that connects to the lake in our area. For about $5000 total I built a 24 foot by 24 foot cabin that has a kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom.

Our cabin can be hooked to a generator (when it's extremely hot here in the summers) or used just like it is (in the winters). Now, anytime we want we can pack the family up, drive to our cabin and spend as long as we like there for very little cost.

Adopting a Pet

Pets are an investment. The return on that investment is usually undying devotion and constant companionship. If you are going to buy a pet please do research into who you are buying the pet from. Visit the place before purchasing your pet and if you feel uncomfortable do not support them with your business.

A great (and low cost) alternative to getting a treasured companion is to adopt a pet. Find a pet rescue service and give a pet a home. Our dog, Shye, was rescued from a puppy mill which was a horrid place. She now has a home, two other puppy friends, and a safe place to live the rest of her life. We wouldn't trade her for anything.

Ramen Creativity

Ramen noodles are probably one of the cheapest and easiest to prepare foods you can buy. The good news is kids can be taught to make these and they LOVE them. Kids hungry for a hot, cheap meal? Grab a pack of ramen and presto!

The wife and I stock up on tons of these every month. If you get tired of them there are some creative ways to "spice" them up. I add some garlic, a touch of Tabasco, and a small amount of olive oil to mine and it's great.

You can also think of ramen as small, meal-sized noodle dishes. Just leave out the flavor packets. I sometimes cook the noodles, add cheese (melts well), some salsa if you like and have a quick tasty meal.

The Great American Picnic

For some reason people have forgotten how to have fun without spending a fortune. Sure it's a blast to take the family to the movies every now and again but the cost does add up. Believe it or not, the simple truth is that your kids want to spend time with you and it doesn't really matter where.

Cheap Puppy Pad Alternative

The beautiful wife and I are the owners of three dogs. We try to take our dogs outside as often as we can but sometimes real life makes this impossible. For these situations we find ourselves using a ton of puppy pads. If you buy puppy pads you will find they are quite expensive.

We discovered a cheap alternative (not as cheap as newspaper but a LOT more effective and sanitary). Go to a store and buy the off brand Depends type underpads. These are usually made for humans with bladder problems and work by placing on areas they frequently sit.

The good news is they work just as well as puppy pads (better, in her opinion, the wife is telling me) and are a LOT cheaper. We use the 23 inch by 36 inch pads and save a ton of money doing so.

Vacation Nearby

You don't have to travel 1000 miles to have a vacation. The wife and I live about 100 miles from a beach (lucky us). We drive to the beach once a year and make a vacation of it. We sometimes bring a tent and sleep out on the beach, combining some camping with a beach experience.

Look around you where you live. Live close to a historical spot? Take a trip there with the wife and kids. Live close to museums? Go there. Be creative and vacation in your own home state or even home city!

Tea Up

Soft Drinks cost a ton and are pretty unhealthy. The wife and I have a drink of choice that has been around for centuries: tea! We make a ton of the stuff and drink it with meals and pretty much whenever we are thirsty.

We purchased a cheap coffee pot to brew our tea. We buy the family-sized tea bags and brew up a pot by placing 2 of these where the coffee grounds go. After the pot is full we take the tea bags out and place them directly in the pot to let them steep. We then add the contents of the pot to a gallon jug, sugar it up to taste, and place it in the fridge.

This site is not here to complain (although I'm sure I'll include some minor ones in parts, being human and all). I am here to show American's how to save money as the price of gas increases. What does this all have to do with the price of gas?

As the price of oil and gas continue to rise, Americans and those around the world are starting to feel the crunch on their pocket books. This will only get worse as time goes on. Even if oil speculation is brought under control it will still only be a matter of time before prices begin to climb again. The simple fact is this: we are running out of oil. It is a finite resource and we're using it all.
